Open Source 101 Conference: Call for Speakers

THE OPEN SOURCE 101 SERIES CALL FOR PAPERS NOW OPEN THROUGH MONDAY, FEB 4 The All Things Open team will again host a spring Open Source 101 event in 2019, and speakers are now being sought. The one-day conference will take place Thursday, April 18 in the heart of Columbia, South Carolina’s technology, educational, and entertainment district. It will feature 15 minute keynote, 45 minute, and extended 1.5 hour talks from leading developers, technologists, and thought leaders. In 2018, nearly 500 technologists, decision makers and students attended from 11 U.S. states. The audience was enthusiastic and diverse. 500+ are expected in 2019.

Florida Atlantic REU

Florida Atlantic University's Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering (I-SENSE) hosts an intensive summer research program in sensing and smart systems for talented undergraduate students across the country. Closely related to the Internet of Things, smart systems represent an emerging class of distributed systems that provide real-time awareness of conditions, trends, and patterns to support improved decision-making, and often, automation. The on-campus research will focus on I-SENSE’s three main program areas: Infrastructure Systems, Marine and Environment and Health and Behavior. YOUR FLORIDA EXPERIENCE
  • This paid, nine-week program focuses on training, mentoring, research and an overall experience for students that prepares them for graduate studies or careers in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) disciplines.
  • Undergraduate researchers are paid $500 along with a $120 meal allowance, per week. Participants will also receive $600 travel allowances.
  • Participants will be housed in apartment-style dormitories on FAU’s Boca Raton, just three miles from the beach.

Students will participate in projects with the central theme of improving instructional technology design, enhancing academic curricula and modeling learning experiences. From an analytical methodology standpoint, projects will investigate approaches to model the dynamic knowledge state of a student throughout a sequential academic program. Projects will also model the learning behavior of younger students in informal settings by analyzing the server logs of the Scratch framework or Online Engineering Communities. Projects will also model the learning habits of practitioners while interacting with online programming environments. Student Opportunity at Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group

We are looking for a graduate or doctoral student to work with us on a SAS project. This project provides the opportunity to develop a real world application for Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group that could enhance your resume and provide experience in business analytics and statistical analysis. Below is a brief description of the project. If you are interested, please email us your resume and a brief statement explaining why you are interested. Project Title: Palmetto Health Family Medicine Provider Panel Assignments and Patient Redistribution The objective of this work is to design a SAS code that will redistribute existing family medicine patients of resident physicians that are graduating residency to other resident physicians in the practice for optimal continuity of care. The intended outcomes of this program is to contribute to Palmetto Health-USC patient retention, improvement in access to care, and revenue management. The student will have the opportunity to work directly with Cerner electronic medical record data and will be given experience in writing and initiating SAS code for a reputable health business. Project Requirements: To achieve our objectives, we need a student to partner with PH-USC information technology staff and medical director to create a list of primary care provider panel data from PH-USC Family Medicine patients. Palmetto Health-USC Family Medicine Center participates in the training of family medicine students and residents. Changing residents will need their patients to be redistributed among remaining physicians. Since the data will contain approximately 5000 patients to be reassigned, with the goal of even distribution for different medical conditions and ages, this will be a large-scale dataset. The proper storing and cleaning of the data will be necessary before analysis. This program will need to be run at least once a year - near graduation and at other times when a physician may leave the practice. We estimate that the amount of work required will span 2-3 weeks dependent on student SAS experience. We are seeking an individual with strong working knowledge of website development and application program interface (API) technologies Connecting Health Innovations LLC (CHI) is a spinoff company from the University of South Carolina (USC). Its current purpose is to improve public health and clinical outcomes by increasing availability of products based on the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®), which was invented in the Arnold School of Public Health at USC. With over 250 publications and 3000 citations during the last 52 months, the DII has become one of the most successful innovations in biomedicine in the past couple of decades. Now, the challenge is to translate this academic success into public health and clinical medicine results that really matter. In order to move products to the marketplace, CHI is looking for an individual with strong working knowledge of website development and application program interface (API) technologies. This individual should be willing to learn the rudiments of our business and our USC-based research, which focuses on control of diet-associated inflammation. The successful individual will have familiarity in working on Microsoft platforms and with these specific tools and programming languages:
  • ASP.net scripting knowledge (including knowledge of VB script or C#.)
  • PHP scripting language
  • Familiarity with Python, Ruby, .NET, Java would be desirable.
Because of the flow of work, we would like the individual to work on an hourly basis and be flexible with respect to amount of time committed.
