Web Developer: Drupal

WEB DEVELOPER REQUIRED I'm starting an online language school and I need a Web site for it. The Web site is already up, but it looks terrible. My database is already designed in php-MySQL. I need the Web site to be cleaned up, the forms for database maintenance, the ability to accept payments online, some e-commerce - we sell books etc, for starters, and then I want to expand the Web site as required later on. I want everything to be open source - no proprietary packages, no Microsoft anything! As far as I am aware, Drupal is an excellent way of handling my requirement, but I don't want to have to learn Web development. I'll pay you a decent hourly rate, weekly on receipt of your invoice. Write lionelf@ftc-i.net or call 843-409-0172. Put WEBSITE in the subject line of the email. Lionel Fleetwood

Depending on your experience a cash sum for the job is available and the potential for work updating the website in the future for a high cash bonus. Please highlight your interest by sending an email to woodforz@email.sc.edu including a resume or some record of your experience or enthusiasm towards the project. Zander Woodford-Smith

Mac Adminstration at the School of Music

The School of Music is in need of some short-term quality assistance with Macintosh OS desktop support and lab-related issues. We need help over the next few weeks, and maybe into October. We desire to fill this part-time position as soon as possible. Examples of the help that is needed is as follows: 1. Assist daily with computer-related issues reported by School of Music faculty and staff 2. Manage the physical setup of a Mac Lab and a new GA office space which has undergone construction and is soon to be completed. 3. Complete other assigned tasks related to simple Mac OS X server issues. We are looking for someone who can dedicate 10-25 hours per week, and we can pay $20/hour. The ideal assistance would be provided by someone who can work mostly without supervision, and is capable of solving minor to possibly complex issues related to Mac OS X desktop computing. The majority of work will involve interaction with School of Music faculty and staff, therefore a professional demeanor and good communication skills are necessary. Hours worked can be flexible, but specific hours will need to be dedicated on Thursdays and Fridays each week. The School of Music is almost 100% Macintosh based. Individuals who posses little or no experience with Mac OS X need not apply. If you know of anyone with appropriate skills, and interested in a temporary part-time job, please have them contact me directly. The most efficient means of communication would be to send a brief resume, specifically showing Mac OS X related skills, to jtrenary@sc.edu. Initial contact by phone isn't preferable. A phone interview and in-person interview will commence before hire. Thanks, Jason Jason Trenary Information Technology Director University of South Carolina School of Music Columbia, SC 29208 803-777-5360 jtrenary@sc.edu

CS Has Third Highest Starting Salaries

From this article:

With an average starting salary of $61,112, computer science is the third most highly paid major for the Class of 2010, according to a National Association of Colleges and Employers study of recent bachelor’s degree program graduates. Computer engineering and electrical/electronics engineering came in fourth and fifth at $59,917 and $59,381, respectively. Ranked first and second were petroleum and chemical engineers.

“Those high starting salary offers reflect the uneven supply and demand that exists for these graduates, even in the current economy,” says Marilyn Mackes, NACE executive director. “All of the top five earners are in short supply. Each accounts for less than 1 percent of the degrees granted.”

Engineering degrees accounted for only 5.4 percent of the 1.56 million bachelor’s degrees awarded in 2008, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

However, despite these relatively high starting salaries, each is actually lower in comparison to last year’s averages. The average starting salary for computer engineering grads is down 2.9 percent while electrical/electronics engineering has seen a decline of 1.2 percent. The loss was smaller for computer science graduates as the average only slipped 0.5 percent.

"In 2009, the average annual compensation per employee (wages, salaries and employer contributions for pensions, insurance and government social insurance) was $89,781," the report explains.

Computers: One of the Few Job Growth Areas

From this article in The State

Who’s hiring? Some of the strongest data this year come from the professional and business services sector, usually associated with white-collar employment. Employers in this broad category have added jobs for eight consecutive months, 572,000 from January through June. The sector accounted for more than 16.7 million U.S. jobs in June. The information technology sector outperforms most others. IT employment in computer systems design grew to 1,441,000 positions this June from 1,426,900 in December 2007. Similarly, hiring continues to rise for custom computer programmers, whose employment numbers in June stood at 626,000, up from 620,000 in December 2007.
