Responsibilities

• Research tasks include designing and developing a AI smartphone app with integrated API features to access data from the server with instant modifications through API requests.
• Literature reviews, grant development, tables, figures, and reference lists
• assisting with study design, recruitment, data collection, developing and maintaining data records
• Assist with the recruitment of study participants
• Coordinate data collection and data analysis activities
• Developing and maintaining patient data records and entering data into databases to be used for further statistical evaluation
• Assist with the development of materials for professional presentation and publication. 
• Other research-related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Graduate student with experience in human-computer interaction, strong written and oral communication skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office software, and experience in app development, database management, and statistical software.

Every year, the Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) at the University of Maryland seeks talented undergraduate and graduate students to participate in the Research for Intelligence & Security Challenges (RISC) Initiative internship program. This 10-week paid and mostly virtual program pairs students with faculty mentors from INSURE consortium member institutions and the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community. Eligible interns may receive security clearances and be considered for future employment with the U.S. government.

Competitively-selected RISC interns (RISCers) work in teams with mentorship from university faculty and government practitioners. They work on real security and intelligence problems posed by the government. 

Over the 10 weeks, students will conduct research and participate in lectures and regular team development meetings in a shared virtual work environment. The summer program concludes with several days of in-person activities in College Park, MD to discuss project outcomes with peers and visiting experts from DOD/IC and to gain greater context on how the work fits into government sponsors' mission space.

The program is structured for team interactions and engagement with government sponsors. Interns attend weekly seminars and regular team development meetings in a shared virtual work environment (though select projects may require on-site work). Interns then participate in final week briefings and activities in person (with travel support).

The Laboratory for Integrative Neuroscience Analyses (LINA), directed by Dr. Christian O’Reilly, is looking to fill an open Ph.D. position in Computational Neuroscience. This position will be fully funded for its first two years by a Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) on an NSF project titled “Neural representation of affective states during narrative listening across the lifespan”. The extension of the funding will depend on grant renewal. The preferred starting date is on May 16th, 2025.

The project: This project investigates the representations of affect (valence and arousal) across brain regions and frequencies from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) as a function of age and sex. This project aims to 1) map fMRI activations associated with affect during narrative listening; 2) take advantage of the high temporal resolution of EEG to refine our understanding of the spectral property of affect encoding; 3) develop a model of affect to uncover the mechanisms and causal relationships in the affective neural networks. The students selected for this position will concentrate mostly on the two last aims (EEG analyses and modeling of causal relationships) but will collaborate with the teams on every aspect of the project.
