Florida Atlantic REU

Florida Atlantic University's Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering (I-SENSE) hosts an intensive summer research program in sensing and smart systems for talented undergraduate students across the country. Closely related to the Internet of Things, smart systems represent an emerging class of distributed systems that provide real-time awareness of conditions, trends, and patterns to support improved decision-making, and often, automation. The on-campus research will focus on I-SENSE’s three main program areas: Infrastructure Systems, Marine and Environment and Health and Behavior. YOUR FLORIDA EXPERIENCE
  • This paid, nine-week program focuses on training, mentoring, research and an overall experience for students that prepares them for graduate studies or careers in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) disciplines.
  • Undergraduate researchers are paid $500 along with a $120 meal allowance, per week. Participants will also receive $600 travel allowances.
  • Participants will be housed in apartment-style dormitories on FAU’s Boca Raton, just three miles from the beach.

Students will participate in projects with the central theme of improving instructional technology design, enhancing academic curricula and modeling learning experiences. From an analytical methodology standpoint, projects will investigate approaches to model the dynamic knowledge state of a student throughout a sequential academic program. Projects will also model the learning behavior of younger students in informal settings by analyzing the server logs of the Scratch framework or Online Engineering Communities. Projects will also model the learning habits of practitioners while interacting with online programming environments. Student Opportunity at Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group

We are looking for a graduate or doctoral student to work with us on a SAS project. This project provides the opportunity to develop a real world application for Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group that could enhance your resume and provide experience in business analytics and statistical analysis. Below is a brief description of the project. If you are interested, please email us your resume and a brief statement explaining why you are interested. Project Title: Palmetto Health Family Medicine Provider Panel Assignments and Patient Redistribution The objective of this work is to design a SAS code that will redistribute existing family medicine patients of resident physicians that are graduating residency to other resident physicians in the practice for optimal continuity of care. The intended outcomes of this program is to contribute to Palmetto Health-USC patient retention, improvement in access to care, and revenue management. The student will have the opportunity to work directly with Cerner electronic medical record data and will be given experience in writing and initiating SAS code for a reputable health business. Project Requirements: To achieve our objectives, we need a student to partner with PH-USC information technology staff and medical director to create a list of primary care provider panel data from PH-USC Family Medicine patients. Palmetto Health-USC Family Medicine Center participates in the training of family medicine students and residents. Changing residents will need their patients to be redistributed among remaining physicians. Since the data will contain approximately 5000 patients to be reassigned, with the goal of even distribution for different medical conditions and ages, this will be a large-scale dataset. The proper storing and cleaning of the data will be necessary before analysis. This program will need to be run at least once a year - near graduation and at other times when a physician may leave the practice. We estimate that the amount of work required will span 2-3 weeks dependent on student SAS experience. We are seeking an individual with strong working knowledge of website development and application program interface (API) technologies Connecting Health Innovations LLC (CHI) is a spinoff company from the University of South Carolina (USC). Its current purpose is to improve public health and clinical outcomes by increasing availability of products based on the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®), which was invented in the Arnold School of Public Health at USC. With over 250 publications and 3000 citations during the last 52 months, the DII has become one of the most successful innovations in biomedicine in the past couple of decades. Now, the challenge is to translate this academic success into public health and clinical medicine results that really matter. In order to move products to the marketplace, CHI is looking for an individual with strong working knowledge of website development and application program interface (API) technologies. This individual should be willing to learn the rudiments of our business and our USC-based research, which focuses on control of diet-associated inflammation. The successful individual will have familiarity in working on Microsoft platforms and with these specific tools and programming languages:
  • ASP.net scripting knowledge (including knowledge of VB script or C#.)
  • PHP scripting language
  • Familiarity with Python, Ruby, .NET, Java would be desirable.

Carolina Command Center Manager

The Carolina Command Center Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the College of Information and Communications’ state-of-the-art social media monitoring lab. The manager will serve as the college’s expert in the usage and implementation of the center’s monitoring and reporting software, training faculty, students and other users. The Manager will work with faculty to assist with gathering research-quality social media analytics and to support the center’s role as a teaching tool within the college. In addition, the manager will generate clear, concise data to assist with crisis management efforts and special projects for a variety of stakeholders. He or she also will be responsible for preparing reports on the center’s research. The Manager will coordinate with College administration, faculty and others at the university to develop newsworthy analytics reports that will enhance the research reputation of the college and university. This will require a familiarity with media practices, an ability to identify and communicate relevant trends, and the ability to translate findings into a format easily understood by the general public. The Carolina Command Center Manager will attain expertise with relevant social media software tools, technologies and practices, and will work to remain continuously adept at their usage and implementation. This person will maintain successful relationships with faculty, students, vendors, clients and other users. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: The Carolina Command Center Manager should be an organized, enterprising self-starter with an aptitude for technology, a deep understanding of social media, and a strong strategic understanding of social listening. Experience with at least one social media analytics tool such as Crimson Hexagon, Radian6, Brandwatch or Talkwalker is preferred. Project management skills and a proven ability to meet tight deadlines are a must. Verbal communication skills including the ability to do presentations and assist with classroom instruction are important. An open, collaborative approach is necessary for success in this role. Technical capabilities must be balanced with communications acumen and an awareness of emerging trends across all relevant fields. The ability to work with and manage students is essential. Other preferred abilities include the ability to learn quickly and take initiative. Duties: Oversee the day-to-day operation of the Command Center. This will include generating analytics reports, maintaining displays, hosting training sessions for students and faculty, alerting stakeholders to relevant trends, providing monitoring support during crisis situations, and working closely with the media, vendors and outside clients as needed. Assist with academic research. This may include providing one-on-one training for faculty and students, as well as aiding in the development and maintenance of key reports of interest to the university’s faculty. Assist with classes. This may include providing software demonstrations, assisting students with projects and generating analytics reports for educational use.   Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in communications, information science, computer science or related field as well as at least three years relevant professional experience.
