IT Industry Booms; Job Candidates Lag

Our own Dr. Buell is quoted by the GSA Business magazine. (original article)
"Everybody is desparate. The demand is huge," said Duncan Buell, University of South Carolina Professor in the Computer Science and Engineering department. "There is a company in Columbia that wants to hire 100 people. Our annual output is about 80, so that's just one company that wants more than our entire output.

Programmer at the College of Social Work

I'm at The Center for Child and Family Studies, College of Social Work. We deliver training via an installation of the Moodle LMS to Department of Social Services caseworkers. We use a product called Articulate to create SCORM-compliant quizzes. We would like to get aggregate information from the LMS rather than just the gross scores we now can retrieve. It's clear that the LMS is capturing every answer for every participant. We can go into the "Track details" area of the LMS and see each person's response. We cannot retrieve this information, however, unless we go in and hand count. We would like to hire a programmer / grad assistant who might be able to help us build a tool that would retrieve this information from the LMS. We are able to pay for this service. Software Engineer Salary Survey: Google Tops List

Glassdor.com has published a report on Software Engineer Salaries at the 15 Top Tech Companies:
Of the 15 tech companies in this report, Google Software Engineers earn the highest average base salary for 2012 ($128,336). Trailing closely behind are software engineers at Facebook ($123,626), Apple ($114,413), eBay ($108,809) and Zynga ($105,568).
They also report that the national average software engineer salary is $92,648. So, the average Software Engineer still makes less than the average Lawyer, Pharmacist, Doctor, vice president, or (much less than) Banker, but more than the average manager, accountant, or business analyst. Also, see the slashdot discussion.
