Energy and Sustainability in Europe

The objective of this course is for students to better appreciate the political, social, technical, and economic issues that society is facing with regard to our energy future. This course will provide an introduction to the technical challenges of sustainable energy and how everyone will be engaged through political, economic, and lifestyle decisions.



The two-week Maymester course will examine a variety of energy issues with a focus on European approaches.



The course will be held in various locations in Germany, including Freiburg, Stuttgart, and Munich. Portions of the course will be hosted at the University of Munich and the Fraunhoffer Institute in Freiburg. Planned highlights of the trip include tours of the BMW, Porsche, and Mercedes-Benz Museums, a factory tour at BMW, and the Munich Technical Museum. Cultural events include the Ulm Minster (tallest church in the world) and a trip to the German Alps.



Language proficiency is not required or expected, but may be beneficial.



The course will conclude on May 25, allowing students to pursue other summer opportunities.




Travel in Germany will be on trains and public transportation.



Total travel without tuition is $3,700.

This does not include airfare! Airfare is around $1,500.

Additionally, students must pay for 3 hours tuition. All students qualify for in-state rates, around $1,500.

Scholarships are available for USC students. Deadlines for scholarships vary.
