CSCE 822: Data Mining and Warehousing

Homework Assignment 6: Due date Thursday 12/05/13.

Homework Assignment 5: Due date extended to Tuesday 11/26/13. Additional clarification/correction made to problem 1 (N.B. yellow highlight.)

Homework Assignment 4: Due Tuesday October 29.

Homework Assignment 3: Do problems 2 a-c (but not d-g),5 a-b (but not c), and 6, and 8 from the end of chapter 4.
Due: Oct. 1, 2013. Please submit hardcopy

Project Proposals: Due October 1, 2013.
Your project proposal should contain all of the material that the preposal included.
In addition, your proposal should also contain the following:

  1. Specific discussion of what data mining techniques you will be using.
    Please explain the justification for your choice of data mining techniques.
  2. Gantt chart which lists the tasks and time alloted for each task this semester.
    Tasks must include: data collection, data filtering/normalization, analysis, evaluation of results, presentation preparation, and final written report
  3. Explicit evaluation plan. How are you going to evaluate your results?
  4. Explicit set of deliverables. What is the product of your project?
    Don't forget to include your final written report and presentation material as deliverables
    Note: The deliverables in your proposal should be based on what you can accomplish this semester

Due: Sept. 19, 2013. Please submit hardcopy

Homework Assignment 1 Do problems 2,6,7, and 19 from the end of chapter 2.
Due: Sept. 17, 2013. Please submit hardcopy (don't think dropbox works at the moment)

Project Preproposals: Due September 10, 2013.
Your project preproposal should contain the following:
1) The data mining problem addressed in the proposed project: what are you trying to get out of the data?
2) The larger context of the project, i.e., how does it relate to your larger research endeavor?
3) Short background description: what other related research has been done in this area?
4) Description of the data: a) The source of data. b)The expected number of objects, i.e. samples in the data set. c)A description of data features that you expect to use for analysis.
5) Possible data mining methods to be considered in your project. (skim through text for methods)
6) Expected (hoped for) results.
7) Bibliography for work cited in background section.
Your preproposal should be 1-1.5 single-spaced pages long using 11 or 12 point font and 1 inch margins.
