Visualizing Automobile industry data in United States

Performance of Automotives

The United States has one of the largest automotive markets in the world. According to the American Automotive Policy Council, the automotive industry is the largest manufacturing sector in the United States. American manufacturers produce approximately 8-10 million motor vehicle units annually. The U.S. affiliates of majority foreign-owned automotive companies directly support more than 400,000 U.S. jobs. Additionally, many automakers have U.S.-based engine and transmission plants, and conduct R&D, design, and testing in the United States. New R&D initiatives are transforming the industry to better respond to the opportunities of the 21st century.

Electric vehicles make up a small percentage of the total automotive market today, but their appeal continues to grow as the automakers expand their range, performance, and style. Here are few visualizations to show why Electric vehicles are not only eco-friendly but also better performers than any other non-electric vehicles in industry.

Above plot shows MPG for electric and non-electric vehicles. Max range of non-electric vehicles was almost steady(nearly 40 MPG till 2011. Since 2012, the performance has increased. Electric vehicles manufacturers on the other hand have shown a large increase in performance from 75 MPG in 2012 to 110 MPG in 2014.

Above plot shows the density distribution of highway MPG of vehicles over different Fuel types. Clearly electric vehicles have outperformed any other Oil and Natuaral Gas operated vehicles. However, Diesel automotives have higer average MPG compared to Regular, gasoline,Premium, Flex Fuel and Natural Gas automotives.

Electric Vehicle sales in US

The number of battery electric vehicles(EV) sold in the United States came to about 245,000 in 2019, with sales of Tesla models accounting for almost 80 percent of that figure. Second-ranked Chevrolet accounted for only seven percent of U.S. battery electric vehicle sales.Nissan has been a steady player in the sales of Electric Vehicles. The popularity of BMW in Electric automotives has decreased over teh past 5 years. This data is obtained from Alternative Fuels Data Center of US Department of Energy.

Charging stations across US

An electric vehicle charging network is an infrastructure system of charging stations to recharge electric vehicles. Many government, car manufacturers, and charging infrastructure providers sought to create networks. As of December 2016, Estonia remained the only country to have completed a nationwide public electric charging network. As of November 2020 the largest fast-charging location was in California on the Tesla Supercharger network, with 56 charging stalls.

Below graph shows the distribution of charging stations over different states in U.S. By 2020, majority of the EV charging stations are concentrated in the East and West parts of the country. However, there is a lot of scope for new harging stations in central United States. Hover over the bubbles to see the number of charging stations in each city.
